Proof of Japanese Language Proficiency Required for Some “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” Statuses
Stricter Requirements for Residence Status
On April 15th, the Immigration Bureau published guidelines on its website stating that individuals performing translation and interpretation work will need to possess Japanese language proficiency equivalent to JLPT N2 or higher. For details, please check the Immigration Bureau’s website.
Since the significant tightening of the residence status requirements for “Business Manager” in October of last year (from ¥5M to ¥30M), the requirements for various residence statuses have become much stricter.
This new language proficiency requirement for “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” statuses, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, will require the submission of documents proving Japanese language proficiency. This could make visa renewal more difficult for individuals who perform translation and interpretation as part of their work but do not possess JLPT N2 or higher.
